***UPDATE** as this has recently became the most read post on this blog ❤️ I would just like to inform everyone who do not know, as I know drew use to receive so many messages through insta on this post. It is with great sadness and regret that Drew lost his battle with cancer on 20th May 2018. After this post drew became a massive part in the creation of Iya – Louisa’s posts and helped to further the brand. He was everything Iya – Louisa stands for. A feminist, a gay rights activist, animal rights activist and a racial equality activist. He will truly be missed and we hope to carry on his legacy through out our posts. Please read this post with all the love and life that he had to offer. I can also tell you that Drew went on as Blu Chyna to become an amazing and sickening performer ❤️💜💙💚🧡💛
Have you ever felt like being someone else? Even just for a day? 19 year old Drew LLewelyn has. Originally from Gloucester and now living in Bristol Drew Llewelyn, Performer and self-proclaimed drama queen, created a character to do just that. I spent the day having a very deep (and extremely open!) chat with Drew and getting ready with him as he turned into the character ‘Blu Chyna’. So if you want to know how to do drag, performing and what the hell tucking is! Here is my newest interview; From Drew to Blu…
So I’ve known you Drew for years, so I was quite shocked when Andy Tuck showed me a picture of you with a black wig on and makeup done.
Oh that black wig! I said to a girl who randomly came up to me last night (Drew was out as Blu Chyna in Bristol) and she said “I am obsessed with your makeup,”. We got talking and I said when I look at the very first time I got ready and went out in drag and I was in a £40 lace front wig, I thought I was the Bee’s Knee’s, I look at that picture now and I think.. WHO LET ME GO OUT LIKE THAT! *laughing*
Was that your first ever drag then?
Other than like Halloween costumes where I did things like Bellatrix Lestrange (a harry potter character) and spent a fortune on a corset and makeup and making my own top and I’ve done Cruella De vil. But my first proper drag was last November for my friends 20th. She is the biggest fag hag ever! and just loves everything gay so the theme for her birthday was OTT. So I was like I’ll just do big eye makeup and bushy eyebrows. I regret it now haha.
Makeup Update ** So drew is just doing his primer and NYX’s pore filler and foundation with a Real Techniques beauty blender. Top Tip from drew : REMEMBER TO WET IT FIRST! No pun intended**
What made you do drag in the first place? because sometimes I know you wear makeup as Drew.
It was when I first moved to Bristol because in Gloucester there is like no Gay Scene at all and I wasn’t old enough for it back then anyway. I didn’t really have any access to drag queens or any real gay scene but when I moved to Bristol I got with someone who was very involved in the gay scene and worked in it etc… The place he worked use to book local queens and queens from all over the UK and that’s what made me really get into it. I started a discussion with him about it and he decided to do drag too, so I took a step back to let him have his moment to shine, because I knew I was better than him anyways! *laughing*. My sister who is really honest and can be blunt told me I looked amazing so I was like yay. Then obviously RuPaul’s drag race, I’ve been watching since I was like 15 on netflix, it help to set the standards and also had some influence into me researching how to get into drag.
Not so long ago you met a famous drag queen didn’t you?
I was in a club in Bristol where they book RuPaul queens and local queens so I’ve met people like Trixie Mattel, Alyssa Edwards. And I am meeting more in the next few months. They’re great to talk to and it helps to see what level I need to get to, to do this full-time. I’m studying Drama and Acting at Uni and I’ve always had a nick for drama and being in the light and people watching me. *laughing* Oh god that sounds really vein. But I always love performing and with Drag you can make your own character and of course I have an obsession with makeup!
Did you wear makeup as Drew First?
Uh no, what got me into makeup was being able to use it to transform myself into someone else. But what really got me into it, was Special FX makeup. I use to just do it when I was bored. I looked for artists on instagram and stumbled upon youtubers and became obsessed with people like PatrickStarrr, NikkieTutorials, and Manny Mua.
How did you come up with the name Blu? Was it because it rhymed with Drew…
*Laughing* No! My sister was going to be Chyna Blu but my mum decided to just call her Blu. But that’s where the name came from because I’ve always been jealous of the name. Blue is my favourite colour which helps ahha. And like you pointed out it does rhyme with Drew so if I’m out and people shout Blu I automatically respond to it anyway. So I swapped her original name round.
Makeup Update ** Drew’s concealing, but also uses it as part of his highlight so its extra bright. He uses a lot of primer as he has combination skin and oil based products are a no. He went to the NYX counter in Bristol to get his. And I’d just like to point out drew is nowhere near his base being complete and I’ve finished! I’m setting my light contour with powder and Drew is still blending! But drew is changing his whole face shape. Drew: I try to contour downwards instead of following the natural contour to make my face look more feminine. I’ve got really sensitive skin, so after shaving and primer and everything else my skin gets so red so I’ve also got to counteract that.**
So I just want to stress how different drag is to trans. Drag is more of an art form and performance, do you agree?
What I hear quite regularly is “Oh drag queens are just transgender people who don’t want to come out or who are scared to transition,” I hear that all the time. It’s like no. I am happy having a penis, I am happy being a gay man. So no that’s not it. It’s just about expressing yourself and joining a new community and meeting new people you probably wouldn’t normally interact with. And like with makeup as well, not just drag makeup but all make up is an art form when done properly. Definitely, of course there are some transgender drag queens out there like, Peppermint. And even straight guys doing drag. But that’s not me. It’s nothing to do with sexual preference its acting.
So whats your drag style? As I know there’s all different drag styles.
I try not to do trashy drag. There a people like Trixie Mattel and my favourite drag queen Bianca they’re known as ‘clown drag’ because they do the over the top eye, chiseled jaw line, unblended contour. It’s an art form and it takes skill to do that but I want to look more like a woman. Well an exaggerated woman.
You mentioned your sister earlier. How do the rest of your family feel about you being Blu?
My little sister who’s like 16 and my older sister are very supportive. They always comment, like and shares my post and let me know how proud they are. My dad doesn’t speak to me and hasn’t since he found out I was Gay. I never really had a relationship with him anyway. In the nicest way possible, I think it was a bit obvious… Yeah everyone said “it was obvious how did you not know!” I think he was in denial until my uncle went up to him on my 16th birthday party and sort of outed me to him and it was just never the same. What about your mum? Is she supportive? She’s very supportive about the gay thing, um but whenever I try to talk to her about drag she kind of dismisses it. She always tells me to be who I want to be and dress how I want to dress but sometimes I feel like she’s just saying it to get the conversation over and done with.
Makeup Update ** So drew is just baking his contour, Drew: Baking is where you apply excess powder over the makeup to trap the heat and ‘bake’ the makeup to make the makeup appear lighter and also acts as a setter. I have to spend so long on my base to make sure my make up isn’t going to move. Then I can get really sweaty as OMG (Gay bar in bristol) is like a sweat box **
Did it take a lot of confidence to come out as Blu and release the first pictures on Instagram?
It was nerve-racking. It’s a different thing to be gay then it is to be a man impersonating a woman. But I received quite positive feedback from it, and my family, people who I wouldn’t think would approve of it liked it. It was scary the first time going out as we went out in a club and I got compliments so that gave me confidence.
Okay lets talk clothes! Where do you get your clothes from? whats your style?
I like to keep up with the latest trends and shop from high street stores like Primark, H&M, boohoo, PrettyLittleThing, I’m defiantly a queen on a budget! I’m not into labels as a man either.
What about shoes? Do you wear heels?
Yep, again Primark. As they sell shoes big enough to fit my feet, for a guy my feet aren’t even that big I’m a size 8/9. Trying to find shoes on the high street is hard, and when you finally find a pair they’re ugly! That’s why I always wear the same boots. So when was the first time you walked in heels? From when I was young! When I was about 14 me and my sister had the same size feet so I’d always try on her heels. I found heels and boots for some reason super easy to walk in. I was such a gay child. And yet your dad was still shocked. *laughed* When my Ex boyfriend wore heels for his drag I use to wear heels because he couldn’t walk in them and I was just like “How can you not do this?” So I use to always break in his shoes for him. One good thing about Bristol is that is very hilly so on a night out a lot of people wear flats or boots so I’m not killing myself on a night out.
How does living with girls help you when it comes to drag?
So I share a place and 5 of those are girls. So if I need anything make up wise I’ll borrow their stuff or when I first started out they’d give me tips and now I’m better than them! Wow, they’re going to love that! Its true haha. Like last night one of them said “How do you look better than me and I’m a real woman” and I sarcastically said “Oh well, it’s not hard.”
Makeup Update ** So now I’ve don’t my eyelashes, I’ve done my eyebrows, I’ve done highlight, I’ve done a really light contour and blush and now I’m just finishing with some lipstick. And Drew’s only just finished his eyebrows and he’s still baking his under eyes. Which leads me to the question…**
How long does it take you typically to get ready and turn into Blu?
Around 3 and a half hours! I’m trying to cut it down. So everyone pre’s at mine but I always miss predrinks because of it, I am normally finishing as they’re leaving…
Makeup Update **He lines his lips above and below the natural lip line to make them bigger.**
So I see you’re using brands such as; Jeffree Star and NYX, these are cruelty free brands. Is this important to you?
My Grandad is really into animal rights so I’ve always been like that too. So if I ever found out that one of the brands that I used tested on or harmed animals in any way I would stop using that brand. Which is good because newer brands are coming out as cruelty free and I love trying new brands. I think the fact that Jeffree Star advertises it as cruelty free is a huge selling point for me because cruelty free brands attract me.
Okay so give me 3 words to describe Blu and 3 words to describe Drew, go!
Well uh Blu is very multiple personality, well I guess Drew is too… *laughing* Shes a really lovely person, she’ll shade you and sass you but it will be coming from a lovely place. Shes caring and quite maternal.. wait that’s me too I guess. She’s probably more caring than Drew is, shes definitely more of a people person as Drew is kind of like “Why are you talking to me!” haha. Would you say she’s more of an exaggerated version of your self then? Yes, All of my good qualities in Drew are exaggerated in her, But I make sure all of my bad qualities aren’t in her like my sassiness. When I am in drag I need to put forward a type of brand. Drew doesn’t give a shit but Blu does. I cant name 3 qualities though haha.
Makeup Update ** So Drews contoured the bridge of his nose and near his eyes to emphasize the structure of his face, hes bronzed up, used NYX the ultimate eye shadow pallet in brights and glitter lips hula tulula on his lids. Curled his lashes and put on false lashes to the top and bottom and white bottom liner** **Clothing includes a wig, a very padded bra, spanx, a dress, heeled boots and a jockstrap.. you don’t want to know what for.. oh wait.. he tells us..**
So jockstrap, tucking, what is this!? (Sorry I couldn’t help myself!)
Tucking is when you hide your.. bits to make you look flat. So I use a jock strap, and tape and sometimes ducttape *Shouting in horror* YOU USE DUCTTAPE? yeah that’s what you sometimes need to use! It goes on top of the jockstrap. Is that comfortable though? Like does this hurt. Well its alright, I wouldn’t do this on a daily basis just a few hours a time. But it is comfortable just feels a weird. Well it doesn’t look like you’ve got a… penis so.. (I have no idea why I said that!) When you first tucked did it feel really weird? Yes! I was like, “is this right? is this okay? Am i going to damage anything?” *laughing* Is it going to be okay, is this going to damage you? haha It doesn’t hurt, You have natural sockets that your balls go into, it feels weird and strange but it does not hurt.
Ok ok! so we’re done here haha! Actually we are done, a good couple hours later and Drew has transformed into the beautiful Blu Chyna. So whats your thoughts?
Thank you Drew for being so open about becoming Blu and Blu is gorgeous! Want to ask Drew or Blu anything? either comment bellow or ask on their instagram page : @Drewbiiee
